The Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences at Pax Higher Institute (PAXHI) continues to strengthen practical agricultural training through its active demonstration farm, where students and instructors work together to apply modern farming techniques and conduct real-world agricultural experiments. The farm serves as a learning laboratory that allows students to gain hands-on experience while contributing to innovative agricultural practices suited to local conditions.

Practical Learning Through Demonstration Farming

The demonstration farm is an essential part of the faculty’s commitment to experiential learning. Rather than relying solely on classroom theory, students actively participate in crop production, farm management, and agricultural experimentation. Through this approach, they develop practical skills that prepare them to become competent agricultural professionals and entrepreneurs.

Students are involved in every stage of the farming process, including land preparation, planting, irrigation, crop maintenance, pest management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. This practical exposure helps them understand the full cycle of agricultural production.

Crop Production and Experimental Cultivation

The farm currently focuses on the cultivation of several important food crops, including:

  • Cabbages
  • Tomatoes
  • Watermelons
  • Okra
  • Pepper

These crops were selected because they are widely consumed and commercially valuable within local markets. Students learn improved planting methods, crop spacing techniques, soil management, and sustainable pest control practices that help increase productivity and crop quality.

Dry Season Gardening Innovation

One of the most impressive initiatives at the demonstration farm is the ongoing experimentation with dry season gardening. In many parts of Cameroon, agricultural production declines during the dry season due to limited water availability. The faculty is addressing this challenge by testing innovative cultivation techniques that allow crops to grow successfully even during periods of low rainfall.

These experiments include improved irrigation practices, soil moisture conservation techniques, and crop management strategies designed to maintain productivity during dry conditions. By developing these methods, the faculty is helping to promote year-round farming and improved food security.

Preparing the Next Generation of Agricultural Leaders

Through the demonstration farm, students of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences gain valuable experience that goes beyond theoretical knowledge. They develop problem-solving skills, practical agricultural expertise, and an understanding of sustainable farming systems.

The initiative also reflects Pax Higher Institute’s broader mission of combining academic excellence with practical training, innovation, and community development.

Looking Ahead

The demonstration farm will continue to expand its agricultural activities and research efforts, providing even more opportunities for students to explore innovative farming methods and contribute to sustainable food production. Through such initiatives, Pax Higher Institute remains committed to training professionals who will help transform agriculture and strengthen food systems in Cameroon.
